Biological activities

Acetadote is a pharmaceutical agent and nutritional supplement used primarily as a mucolytic agent and in the treatment of paracetamol (acetaminophen) overdose. Acetadote is an antioxidant molecule endowed with immunomodulatory properties. Acetadote prevents the constitutive as well as the LPS-induced activity of the transcription factor NF-κB. In parallel, acetadote down-regulates the production of cytokines by human dendritic cells as well as their surface expression of HLA-DR, CD86 (B7-2), and CD40 molecules both at the basal state and upon LPS activation. Acetadote also inhibits human dendritic cells responses induced by CD40 engagement.[1] Acetadote inhibits NF-κB translocation to the cellular nucleus and phosphorylation of MAPK p38. Acetadote inhibits mucin synthesis and pro-inflammatory mediators in alveolar type II epithelial cells infected with influenza virus A and B and with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).[2] Acetadote dose-dependently decreases asbestos-mediated induction of c-fos and c-jun mRNA levels.[3] Acetadote improves survival and preserves motor performance in an animal model of familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.[4]
