Biological activities

Albendazole is a benzimidazole drug used for the treatment of a variety of parasitic worm infestations. Albendazole is an effective antimicrosporidial drug. Albendazole exhibits the greatest inhibitory and lethal activity against G. lamblia P1, with an IC50 of 0.01 mg/L and an minimal lethal concentration (MLC) of 34.04 µg/L. [1] Albendazole is a broad spectrum anthelmintic, effective against roundworms, tapeworms, and flukes of domestic animals and humans.18G. lamblia isolates (ACPT 98004, ACPT 98005) are susceptible to albendazole with IC50 ranging from 0.027 to 0.192 µM. [2] The MIC50 of albendazole for E. intestinalis and V. corneae are 8.0 and 55.0 ng/mL. Albendazole is a broadspectrum antiprotozoal benzimidazole which binds to the colchicines binding site of β-tubulin, thereby inhibiting microtubule polymerization. [3] In mice, 2~4 doses of albendazole (> 100 mg/kg twice daily) can complete inhibit cyst excretion and full eliminate trophozoites from the small intestine. [4]

Protocols

Stock solution of albendazole is dissolved in DMSO at a final concentration of 10.0 mg/mL and diluted in tissue culture medium for use. [3]
