Biological activities

Altretamine is an antineoplastic agent. Altretamine has the advantage of being less toxic than other drugs used for treating refractory ovarian cancer.[1] Combination with pyridoxine (vitamin B6), altretamine decreases neurotoxicity and the effectiveness of an altretamine/cisplatin regime.[2] The elimination half-life and toxicity of altretamine can be increased by cimetidine. In vitro, altretamine inhibits incorporation of radioactive thymidine 3H and uridine 3H into DNA and RNA. Altretamine also inhibits protein synthesis in vitro. In a Walker 256 rat carcinosarcoma model in vivo, a daily schedule of altretamine increases the life span of treated animals by 233%. Altretamine also has significant antitumor activity against Dunning leukemia of the rat, mouse sarcoma 180, and mouse adenocarcinoma 755.[3]
