Chemical Structure

Biological activities

Asiaticoside (AS) is a trisaccharide triterpene that is isolated from plant Centella asiatica.[1] Asiaticoside has been widely used as antitumor, wound healing, immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory agents and also has an anxiolytic-like effect.[1] In the aspect of anti-tumor activity, asiaticoside induces the apoptosis of tumor cells and enhances the anti-tumor activity of vincristine.[2] In the aspect of wound healing activity, asiaticoside inhibits iNOS activity and NO production during gastric ulcer healing, meanwhile, asiaticoside alleviates Gram-negative bacteria-caused infection.[3] In the aspect of anti-inflammation activity, asiaticoside attenuates the inflammation on LPS-induced acute lung injury and acute liver injury in mice through reducing the production of cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-6.[4] [5] In vitro, asiaticoside stimulates the epidermis by activating the cells of the malpighian layer in porcine skin.[6] In vivo, asiaticoside is shown to inhibit healing of experimental corneal wounds in rabbits.[7] The IC50s of asiaticoside are 412.68 µM and 343.35 µM against CYP2C19 and CYP3A4, respectively.[8]

Protocols

In vivo: Asiaticoside is dissolved in normal saline.[9]
