Biological activities

Betamethasone is a potent glucocorticoid steroid with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. Betamethasone exhibits significant inhibitory effects on the IL-6 bioactivity with an IC50 value of 10.9 µM.^[1] The IC50 of betamethasone is 38 nM for macrophage inflammatory protein alpha release in polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs). Maximal inhibition of IL-8 release by betamethasone is 91% in PMN cell culture supernatants after 18 hours of stimulation using tumor necrosis factor.^[2] In vitro, betamethasone raises both the cloning efficiency and the proliferative capacity of human astrocytoma.^[3] In vivo, betamethasone inhibits COX-2 gene expression on rigidity in a rat model of Parkinson's disease.^[4]
