Biological activities

Cefepime is a fourth-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. Cefepime has an extended spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Cefepime is active at low concentrations against non-cephalosporinase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella spp. and Shigella spp.) with MIC50 and MIC90 values of ??0.06 mg/L and ??.12 mg/L, respectively. Cefepime inhibits ticarcillin-sensitive strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa at concentrations of 0.5-16 mg/L. The MICs of cefepime against strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa resistant to ticarcillin are 8-64 mg/L.[1] The MIC90 of cefepime for extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs)-producing strains of Enterobacter cloacae is 64 µg/mL, while for non-ESBL producers the MIC90 of cefepime is 0.5 µg/mL.[2] In experimental infections such as meningitis, induced with various bacterial species in neonatal rats and chronic staphylococcal osteomyelitis in rabbits, cefepime administration has good antibacterial efficacy.[3]
