Chemical Structure

Biological activities

Cerubidine is an anthracycline antibiotic. Cerubidine inhibits virus multiplication and shows considerable activity against tumors. Cerubidine acts by binding to DNA and inhibiting both DNA replication and transcription. [1] Living KB-C4 cells incubated with cerubidine shows a significantly reduced amount of cerubidine fluorescence in their nuclei compared to wild type sensitive cells. [2] Cerubidine reacts with DNA, and actinomycin D which complexes with DNA in a different manner to inhibit RNA production. Cerubidine has a growth-inhibiting action against gram positive micro-organisms, and inhibits the multiplication of coliphages. In hepatoma ascites cells in vitro, cerubidine inhibits the incorporation of adenine-8 14C into nuclear RNA fractions at doses not inhibiting its incorporation into DNA. Cerubidine is temporarily effective in some cases of neuroblastoma, reticulum cell sarcoma and rhabdomyosarcoma. [3] Cerubidine is used for remission induction therapy of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). [4] Cerubidine is more effective in therapeutic efficacy in experimental animal tumor systems than adriamycin.
