Biological activities

Chloramphenicol palmitate is a prodrug of chloramphenicol. Chloramphenicol is a bacteriostatic antimicrobial. Chloramphenicol is effective against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including most anaerobic organisms. E. coli HB101 and E. coli HB101/pKK232-8 are sensitive to chloramphenicol with an IC50 of 1.91 and 1.79 µg/mL, respectively. [1] Chloramphenicol causes the complete inhibition of the acetoclastic methanogenic archaea. Chloramphenicol inhibits anaerobic digestion and methane production at rather low concentrations, with IC50 of 15 and 25 mg/L, respectively. [2]
