Biological activities

Clemastine fumarate is a highly specific H1 receptor antagonist. Clemastine fumarate is considerably more potent than promethazine and chlorpheniramine in preventing wheal formation after intradermal injection of histamine and histamine-induced bronchoconstriction in guinea pigs.[1] Clemastine fumarate has a significantly great inhibitory effect on histamine induced weals with an IC50 of 0.92 µM. [2] Clemastine fumarate has moderate anticholinergic activity. The effect clemastine fumarate in reducing sneezing is due to competition with histamine for presumed H1 binding sites on the sensory nerves responsible for the stimulus. [3]
