Biological activities

Dopamine hydrochloride is a physiological antagonist of ACh. Dopamine hydrochloride antagonizes the early nicotinic action of ACh liberated from preganglionic fibres which facilitates its late muscarinic action. Dopamine hydrochloride exhibits a potent and prolonged inhibitory action upon the frequency of chemosensory discharges. Dopamine hydrochloride exerts both inhibitory and excitatory effects on the chemosensory fibres of the carotid body superfused in vitro. Dopamine hydrochloride reduces the firing of caudate neurones stimulated by impinging cholinergic neurons or iontophoretic application of ACh. [1] Dopamine hydrochloride (3-100 µM) also inhibits firing, hyperpolarizes and causes an outward current. [2]
