Biological activities

Ellagic acid is a potent anticarcinogenic agent. Ellagic acid is a phenolic compound present in fruits and nuts including raspberries, strawberries and walnuts. Ellagic acid inhibits certain carcinogen-induced cancers. Ellagic acid at a concentration of 10-5 M induces G1 arrest within 48 hours, inhibits overall cell growth and induces apoptosis in CaSki cells after 72 hours of treatment.[1] Ellagic acid shows strong anti- proliferative activity against Caco-2, MCF-7, Hs 578T, and DU 145 cancer cells with IC50 of 37, 72, 59 and 42 µM, respectively. Ellagic acid at 1-100 µM dose- dependently inhibits HUVEC tube formation and proliferation on a reconstituted extracellular matrix. Ellagic acid induces reduced cancer cell (Caco-2 cell) viability. [2] In vivo, oral administration of ellagic acid significantly reduces the level of lipid peroxidase and liver dihydroxy proline in animal models. [1]
