Biological activities

Emtricitabine (FTC) is a new nucleoside agent that has activity against both human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV). Emtricitabine has in vitro activity against both laboratory strains of HIV-1 and HIV-2 and isolates of HIV-1 with EC50 ranged from 0.002 to 1.5µM. Besides, emtricitabine also exhibits anti-HBV activity in vitro with EC50 ranging from 0.01 to 0.04µM. Emtricitabine demonstrates in vitro synergy with zidovudine and stavudine and additive in vitro activity when combined with zalcitabine or didanosine.[1] Emtricitabine possesses anti-HIV-1 IIIB activity an IC50 of 27.7µM. [2] In vivo, emtricitabine significantly reduces viremia and intrahepatic WHV replication in a dose-dependent manner, with no effect on the levels of hepatic WHV RNA or the levels of woodchuck hepatitis surface antigen in the serum of woodchucks.[3] Specifically, emtricitabine inhibits HBV DNA polymerase and HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) in vivo. [4]
