Biological activities

Flunisolide is a corticosteroid which is used to treate allergic rhinitis. The IC50 of flunisolide is 32 nM for inhibition of eosinophil viability.^[1] The principal mechanism of action of flunisolide is to activate glucocorticoid receptors. Flunisolide (10 µM) significantly reduces MMP-9 and TIMP-1 and increases MMP-9/TIMP-1 molar ratio in sputum cells (SC) isolated from induced sputum samples of 12 mild-to-moderate asthmatics. In addition, flunisolide decreases TGF-β and fibronectin release by SC and increases eosinophil apoptosis.^[2] Flunisolide effectively inhibits ICAM-1 expression and GM-CSF and IL-5 release in a normal human bronchial epithelial cell line (BEAS-2B).^[3] When administered in combination with salbutamol, flunisolide is able to potentiate the effects both in vitro and in vivo on relaxation of the tracheobronchial smooth muscle of the guinea-pig.^[4]
