Biological activities

Frusemide is an inhibitor of sodium-potassium-chloride (Na-K-Cl) cotransport. Frusemide is widely used in the treatment of acute pulmonary oedema, chronic congestive heart failure and hypertension. Frusemide at 10-5 M specifically inhibits Na-K-Cl cotransport, on contraction caused by histamine, potassium chloride, and hypertonic sodium chloride in bovine airways. Frusemide inhibits vascular smooth muscle contractility, and signal transduction pathways in vascular and airway smooth muscle share several common features. Frusemide can release dilator prostaglandins from vascular endothelium.[1] Frusemide exerts an anti-vasoconstrictor effect independent of its diuretic properties. Frusemide, at concentrations in the therapeutic range (10-5 M), inhibits angiotensin ??induced contraction on human isolated IMA and SV. [2]
