Biological activities

Guaifenesin is an expectorant compound. Guaifenesin act as an expectorant by increasing the volume and reducing the viscosity of secretions in the trachea and bronchi. Guaifenesin also stimulates the flow of respiratory tract secretions, allowing ciliary movement to carry the loosened secretions upward toward the pharynx. Guaifenesin suppresses mucin production in a dose-dependent manner in differentiated human airway epithelial cells in vitro.[1] The dose of guaifenesin necessary to produce lateral recumbency in adult horses is 134 mg/kg. The administration of guaifenesin significantly decreases systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial blood pressures. Guaifenesin treatment also transiently reduces arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) in vivo.[2]
