Biological activities

Hydrocortisone is a steroid hormone. Hydrocortisone is widely used in septic shock. Hydrocortisone down-regulates the Interleukin-2 receptor (Il-2r) on CD4⁺ T-cells. Hydrocortisone inhibits the expression of iNOS and production of nitrite with an IC50 of 5 µM. ^[1] At 10^-4 M hydrocortisone inhibits erythroid colony formation. And hydrocortisone (10^-7 to 10^-5 M) stimulates erythroid colony growth. ^[2] Systemic hydrocortisone induces a prolonged monocytopenia. Conjoint systemic hydrocortisone around each wound results in the almost complete disappearance of macrophages from the wounds. ^[3] Hydrocortisone treatment affects responses of guinea-pig airways to bronchoconstrictor agents in vivo. The in vivo treatment of guinea pigs with hydrocortisone reduces airway sensitivity to histamine. ^[4]
