Biological activities

Indometacin is a nonselective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase (COX) 1 and 2. The IC50 of indometacin is 0.063 and 0.48 µM against COX-1 and COX-2, respectively.[1] Indomethacin impoves the ability of vasopressin to increase medullary cyclic AMP levels by causing an increased production rather than reduces destruction of the nucleotide.[2] Intrathecal injection of indometacin also reduces C fibre-evoked activity in the thalamus in a dose-dependent fashion, with an ED50 of 100 µg/rat.[3] Besides, it is recently reported that indomethacin also has a potent antiviral activity against SARS coronavirus.[4]

Protocols

In vitro: Indomethacin is dissolved in absolute ethanol at a concentration of 40 mM.[4]
