Biological activities

Ioxilan is a diagnostic contrast agent. Ioxilan is injected intravenously before taking X-ray images to increase arterial contrast in the final image.[2] Scanning and transmission electron micrographs show that ioxilan produces irregularities in the endothelial cell borders.[3] Ioxilan has a lower osmolality and viscosity than iohexol. Ioxilan is formulated with a 3 mM sodium citrate as a buffer and anticoagulant. Ioxilan also produces significant changes in arterial pressure and respiratory rate.
