Biological activities

Levodopa is a chemical that is made and used as part of the normal biology of some animals and plants. The ED50 of levodopa is 3.2 mg/kg for total abnormal involuntary movements (AIMs). Given an adequate dose and magnitude of striatal dopamine depletion, levodopa produces dyskinesia with a continuous spectrum of severity.[1] Levodopa is the precursor to the neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine (noradrenaline), and epinephrine (adrenaline) collectively known as catecholamines. Chronic administration of levodopa causes alterations in mitochondrial respiratory chain activity in rats.[2] Levodopa undergoes carrier-mediated active transport absorption in the intestine, and the major absorption site for levodopa is the duodenum.[3]

Protocols

In vitro: Levodopa is dissolved in water.[3]
