Biological activities

Mebendazole is an anthelmentic dewormer that is used to treat infestations by worms including pinworms, roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, and whipworms. Mebendazole is also effective for treatment of protomyxzoa infestations. Mebendazole kills helminths by inhibiting glucose uptake into susceptible parasites.[1] Mebendazole also exhibits potent antitumor properties. Mebendazole significantly inhibits human adrenocortical carcinoma cells growth, invasion and migration in vitro.[2] Mebendazole inhibits the growth of the lung cancer cell lines A549 with an IC50 of 160 nM. Mebendazole arrests lung cancer cells at the G2-M phase before the onset of apoptosis. Mebendazole treatment also results in mitochondrial cytochrome c release, followed by apoptotic cell death in H1299 and H460 cells. When administered p.o. to nu/nu mice, mebendazole strongly inhibits the growth of human H460 tumor xenografts and significantly reduces the number and size of tumors in an experimental model of lung metastasis.[3] In addition, mebendazole inhibits metastases formation of human adrenocortical carcinoma cells after implantation in nude mice.[2]

Protocols

In vitro: Mebendazole is dissolved in DMSO.[4]
