Chemical Structure

Biological activities

Meropenem is a novel β-lactam antibiotic belonging to the carbapenem class. Meropenem has in vitro activity against a broad range of aerobic and anaerobic organisms, including Pseudomonas species and Bacteroides species. [1] Meropenem inhibits most members of the family enterobacteriaceae at MICs of 0.015 to 0.25 µg/mL, including klebsiella oxytoca, citrobacter freundii, enterobacter cloacae, and proteus vulgaris isolates resistant to cefotaxime, ceftazidime, piperacillin, and gentamicin. Meropenem inhibits pseudomonas aeruginosa at MICs of 1 to 8 µg/mL. And meropenem also inhibits staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci at 0.25 µg/ mL. [2] A collection of ofloxacin-resistant strains is inhibited by meropenem at 4 µg/ mL. [3] Of mice treated with meropenem (20 mg/kg every 8 hours), the survival rate is significantly higher than that of mice without treatment. [4]

Protocols

The solutions of meropenem are diluted in sterile 0.85% saline and delivered intraperitoneally in a volume of 0.1 mL in sterile disposable plastic syringes. [4]
