Biological activities

Mesalazine is an anti-inflammatory compound. Mesalazine reduces the free radical 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl with an IC50 value of 9.5 µM. Mesalazine scavenges hydrogen peroxide and hypochlorite with IC50 values of 0.7 and 37.0 µM, respectively.[1]Mesalazine inhibits ileal and colonic (Na+ + K+)-ATPase in a concentration-dependent manner with IC50 values of 4.0 and 3.5 mM, respectively. Mesalazine also induces inhibition of the ileal and colonic sodium pump activities.[2] In vitro, mesalazine possesses scavenging activity and attenuates the production of oxygen metabolites by neutrophils.[3] Furthermore, combined treatment of Caco-2 cells with butyrate and mesalazine inhibits cell proliferation and reduces survivin protein level in vitro.[4] Mesalazine improves replication fidelity in cultured colorectal cells.[5] Mesalazine inhibits lipid peroxidation microsomes with an IC50 of 12.6 µM in rat liver. Mesalazine (50 mg/kg) significantly inhibits gastric mucosal lipid peroxidation induced by ischemia and reperfusion in rats. Mesalazine also inhibits the formation of LTB4 in rat peritoneal neutrophils with an IC50 of 44.9 µM.[1]

Protocols

In vitro: Mesalazine is dissolved in ethanol .[5]
