Biological activities

Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor. Nexium reduces acid secretion through inhibition of the H⁺/K⁺ ATPase in gastric parietal cells. Nexium prevents formation of gastric acid. Nexium is a magnesium salt of esomeprazole. is also a proton pump inhibitor with a Ki of 8 µM for competitive inhibition of CYP2C19 activity. ^[1] Esomeprazole inhibits R-138727 formation from prasugrel thiolactone.^[2] The MIC50 and MIC90 of esomeprazole are 16 and 32 mg/L against H. pylori, respectively.^[3] Esomeprazole is 97% bound to plasma proteins.^[4] Esomeprazole increases gastric total antioxidant capacity in mice. Esomeprazole significantly improves survival in mice that receives indomethacin. Esomeprazole reduces free radical production, as estimated by lipid peroxide levels. Esomeprazole appeares to increase gastric total antioxidant capacity.^[5]
