Biological activities

Oxandrolone is an oral anabolic steroid. Oxandrolone inhibits β-glucuronidase activity with an IC50 of 190.3 µM. Oxandrolone can promote muscle re-growth in AIDS for the treatment of severe burn injury, trauma, chronic infections, neuromuscular disorders and alcoholic hepatitis.[1] The use of high-dose oxandrolone results in increased nuclear fluorescence of the osteoblast AR, increased osteoblast differentiation markers in cultured osteoblasts and decreased bone marker in cultured osteocyte-like cells in vitro. [2] Oxandrolone suppresses glucocorticoid action via crosstalk between androgen receptor (AR) and glucocorticoid receptor (GR). In cells expressing the GR without the AR, oxandrolone alone (5 µM) causes a negligible increase in luciferase activity. Oxandrolone markedly depresses luciferase expression induced by both methylprednisolone and dexamethasone. Oxandrolone induces essentially complete migration of AR to the nucleus. [3] Oxandrolone administration significantly increases mRNA concentrations of skeletal muscle AR without changing insulin-like growth factor I mRNA concentrations. Short term oxandrolone administration stimulates an increase in skeletal muscle protein synthesis and improves intracellular reutilization of amino acids. [4]

Protocols

Oxandrolone (2.5 mg) is diluted in 2 mL of DMSO and subsequently diluted in culture media. [2]
