Biological activities

Pentacarinat is an antimicrobial medication given for prevention and treatment of pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) caused by Pneumocystis jirovecii. The exact mechanism of pentacarinat?? anti-protozoal action is unknown, though pentacarinat may involve reactions with ubiquitin.^[1] Pentacarinat (200 µM) completely inhibits splicing in vitro of the Ca.LSU group I intron ribozyme.^[2] MIC50s of pentacarinat in RPMI and YNB media for all of the Aspergillus species are 32 and 8 µg/mL, respectively.^[3] The MICs of pentacarinat, based on 95% reduction of growth for C. krusei and C. parapsilosis, are 16 and 4 µg/mL, respectively. In addition, the geometric mean MIC of pentacarinat for Scedosporium prolificans isolates is 57 µg/mL (range, 8 to 256 µg/mL). The MIC50 and MIC90 of pentacarinat for Scedosporium prolificans isolates is 64 and 128 µg/mL, respectively.^[4]
