Biological activities

Piroxicam is a highly selective inhibitor of COX-1.[1] Piroxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug of the oxicam class. Piroxicam is used to relieve the symptoms of rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, primary dysmenorrhoea, postoperative pain, and act as an analgesic, especially where there is an inflammatory component. The IC50 of piroxicam is 0.5 µM against COX-1. Piroxicam inhibits COX2 with an IC50 value of 4.4 µM.[2] In canine cell cultures (Madin-Darby canine kidney cells, osteosarcoma, mammary carcinoma, and lymphoma), piroxicam inhibits cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner.[3] In vitro cytotoxicity assays against 4 canine tumor cell lines, piroxicam shows no direct antitumor effects. In vivo, piroxicam (0.3 mg/kg p.o) treatment has antitumor activity in dogs with histopathologically confirmed, measurable, nonresectable transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder.[4]
