Biological activities

Prednisone is a synthetic corticosteroid agent that is commonly used as potent immunosuppressive drugs. Prednisone is a glucocorticoid prodrug that is converted to prednisolone by 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase in the liver.[1] Prednisone is used to treat certain inflammatory diseases (such as severe allergic reactions) and (at higher doses) some types of cancer, but has many significant adverse effects. In vitro, prednisone blocks peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) growth in the G1 phase of cell cycle and inhibits both IL-2 receptor (IL- 2R) expression and IL-2 secretion. Prednisone increases apoptosis in PHA-activated human PBL in dose- and time-dependent, and the apoptotic effect of prednisone is stronger on CD8+ than on CD4+ T lymphocytes.[2] In wistar male rats, the low-dose prednisone (28, 87 and 257 µg/animal/day) has no effect on the oxidative burst mediated by complement receptors during the rat neutrophil phagocytosis of complement-opsonize zymosan (-opZy).[3]
