Biological activities

Sparfloxacin is a new difluorinated quinolone. Sparfloxacin has a broad antibacterial spectrum that includes the pathogens (enterococci,streptococci, Mycobacterium spp., Chlamydia spp., and Mycoplasma spp), which are not sufficiently susceptible to other quinolones. The MIC90 of sparfloxacin for the members of the family Enterobacteriaceae tested (Escherichia coli,Enterobacter Spp.) is 0.5 µg/mL. Sparfloxacin inhibits some Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates with a MIC90 of 8 µg/mL. Sparfloxacin also inhibits Staphylococcus spp. and Enterococcus faecalis with MIC90 of 0.12 and 2 µg/mL, respectively. At 0.5 µg/mL, sparfloxacin can inhibits all Streptococcus pneumoniae strains.[1] The MIC90 of sparfloxacin against Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumonia and Staphylococcus aureus (except quinolone-resistant, methicillin-resistant S. aureus) are 0.24, 0.24 and 0.12 mg/L, respectively. [2] The MIC90 of sparfloxacin against 43 strains of M. pneumonia is 0.063 µg/mL. Sparfloxacin at 15 mg/kg twice daily for 5 days and 10 mg/kg once daily for 5 days decreases the numbers of viable M. pneumoniae cells significantly compared with that of the untreated control. [3]

Protocols

Sparfloxacin is suspended in 0.2% carboxymethyl cellulose for oral administration. [3]
