Biological activities

Sulfapyridine is an antimicrobial agent. Sulfapyridine is a major metabolite of salicylazosulfapyridine. Sulfapyridine is shown to be strong inducer of kinetochore positive (KC+) micronucleus.[1] Sulfapyridine inhibits spontaneous cytotoxicity mediated by human natural killer (NK) cells. [2] Sulfapyridine suppresses superoxide radicals (O2-) radical production with an IC50 of > 3 mM. [3] Sulfapyridine mimics the paraaminobenzoic acid (PABA), which is a natural substrate required for the biosynthesis of folic acid. Sulfapyridine inhibits the activity of the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS), which catalyzes the displacement of pyrophosphate from a pteridine substrate resulting in a covalent bond to the amino group of PABA. The MIC of sulfapyridine against Escherichia coli is < 1,027 µM. Sulfapyridine inhibits the growth of K562 cells with an IC50 of < 100 µM. [4] In vivo, sulfapyridine induces predominantly aneuploidogenic type damage. [1]

Protocols

Sulfapyridine is dissolved in water at pH 9 (the pH is adjusted with NaOH). [4]
