Biological activities

Terbinafine is an allylamine derivative antimycotic compounds. Terbinafine is highly active against dermatophytes with MIC values ranging from 1 to 10 ng/mL. The MIC values of terbinafine against aspergilli are ranging from 0.05 to 1.56 µg/mL. The MIC values of terbinafine against Sporothrix schenckii are ranging from 0.1 to 0.4 µg/mL. The MIC values of terbinafine against yeasts are >0.1 µg/mL . Terbinafine displays a primary fungicidal action against dermatophytes, other filamentous fungi, and S. Schenckii.[1] For 259 C. albicans isolates, the MIC50 of terbinafine is 1 µg/mL, and the MIC90 is 4 µg/mL. Terbinafine is also highly active against Candida parapsilosis with MIC90 of 0.125 µg/mL. Terbinafine shows potentially interesting activity against isolates of Candida dubliniensis, Candida guilliermondii, Candida humicola, and Candida lusitaniae.[2] In nude mice implanted wtih COLO 205 cells, subsequent intraperitoneal injections of terbinafine (50 mg/kg) leads to obvious decline in tumor size, up to 50-60%.[3] Terbinafine is also effective in experimental fungal infections of laboratory animals.[4]

Protocols

In vivo: Terbinafine is dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide and mixed with polyethylene glycol 400 and Aerosil in a proportion of 4:5:1.[4]
