Biological activities

Methyldopa is an α-adrenergic agonist psychoactive drug used as a sympatholytic or antihypertensive. Methyldopa is a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme DOPA decarboxylase, also known as aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase, which converts L-DOPA into dopamine. Methyldopa shows significant cellular uptake in both CHO-K1 cells and CHO/hPEPT1 cells. Methyldopa exhibits significant inhibition of Gly-Sar uptake in CHO/hPEPT1 cells with an IC50 of 151.6 mM. ^[1] Methyldopa induces red-cell autoantibodies by inhibiting the activity of suppressor lymphocytes. Methyldopa inhibits T-lymphocyte suppression of IgG production by peripheral-blood mononuclear cells stimulated by poke-weed mitogens. Methyldopa causes a 30 to 80% reduction in the proliferative response of peripheral-blood mononuclear cells to mitogens in vitro. Methyldopa also causes a persistent elevation of intracellular lymphocyte cyclic AMP in vivo. ^[2]
